Prevalence of pseudopregnancy in spayed bitches

The University of Glasgow, School of Veterinary Medicine, with sponsorship from Ceva Animal Health is investigating the prevalence of pseudopregnancy in spayed bitches. The research team consists of Pippa Hutchison, Dr Tim Parkin, Caroline Warnes and Dr Philippa Yam.

Through a simple, easy to answer questionnaire, valuable data will be gathered looking into how often veterinary surgeons are diagnosing and treating pseudopregnancy, and in particular how frequently the condition occurs both before and after spaying.

Tanya Leslie MRCVS comments that “Ceva is delighted to have been given the opportunity to support this work to investigate and raise awareness of this important issue”.

The questionnaire will be posted out to a representative sample of veterinary surgeons at the end of October. All completed questionnaires need to be returned by 13th November 2015. These will be entered in a draw for the chance to win £300 in cash. It is intended that following this initial work, a prospective study establishing the wider incidence of pseudopregnancy in both entire and spayed bitches will ensue.
