The British Veterinary Association is asking members to put themselves forward as candidates in the upcoming elections for BVA Council.

In five of the 12 regions BVA is seeking regional representatives who are willing to gather and represent the views of their fellow members as part of the BVA's policy-making process.

Nominations are open for candidates in Scotland, South-East, South-West, North-West and East of England. Candidates will be elected by the membership in their region and nominations will close at 4pm on 12th December 2014.

Commenting, BVA President John Blackwell said:

"Regional representatives play a crucial role in feeding in the views and ideas of members into the BVA Council, the overarching policy-making body at BVA. Our regional representatives are central to its success.

"Their ability to engage with current issues, represent the views of colleagues and share information to the wider membership will be a key requirement for the role.”

Application packs, including an information sheet, role description, and application form, are available to download from the BVA website

Candidates in each of the five regions will be announced shortly after the closing date. The election process will be run by the Electoral Reform Services on behalf of BVA and all members within a region will be eligible to vote. This year all voting will take place online so it is essential that BVA members ensure the BVA has their correct email by logging on the members’ area of the website before voting begins on 19th January 2015.

The role of BVA Council:

BVA Council’s primary role is

  • to represent members’ views on matters of veterinary policy
  • to advise the Board on matters of veterinary policy
  • to appoint four members as Directors of the Board
  • to approve new members of the Association and to recommend honorary members, honorary associates and life members for election
  • to recommend for election the Council’s preferred candidates for President and President-Elect
