Nova launches canine and equine compounding

Nova Laboratories launched equine and canine compounding services at the BSAVA World Congress, strengthening its position as the leading supplier of veterinary reformulations.

Within the Cascade, Nova is workingwith specialist vets to improve pet compliance, by developing pet-specific capsules and suspensions when no licensed medicine exists. This includes large dose (fewer) capsules for horses to swallow and newcompounds for dogs.

It also means new batch compounding for cats, as the Leicester-based company is increasing its existing range of medicines available to feline vets, with a 48-hour turnaround, certificate of analysis and a guarantee of the same quality control as its human medicines division.

John Seaton, Nova’s Commercial and Financial Director, said: “We are helping vets to save lives by increasing medicine availability within the Cascade, developing products specifically formulated for an individual animal’s treatment.

“Our companion animal compounding service has generated huge interest, enabling us to roll out reformulations for equine and canine vets and increase our range of reformulations for felines.

“We were very proud to be supporting the veterinary industry at BSAVA and enjoyed meeting customers old and new in Birmingham.”

He added: “Nova has developed considerable expertise in compounding and reformulation and is delighted to be working alongside specialist feline vets to increase the range of medicines available.”

Nova has been working with feline vets from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh for the past year. It now batch manufactures Ronidazole capsules to match 80 per cent of vets’ requirements (it is difficult to manage small kittens and very large cats within a strict batch process, so Nova will continue to manufacture capsules on an individual basis too).

Nova can also produce topical solutions, creams and ointments - such as percutaneous gels to rub on the inside of a cat’s ear, which are particularly useful for ‘fractious’ cats.
