Bike ride raises £2,500 for Hounds for Heroes

A bike ride by staff from the Mandeville Veterinary Hospital in Northolt to Exmouth in Devon has beaten its target raising more than £2,500 for Hounds for Heroes, a charity which provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women from the emergency services.

A team of 20 vets, vet nurses and other staff from the Mandeville Veterinary Hospital and other branches from the Goddard Veterinary Group completed the 167 mile journey in 13 hours on Saturday 13 April.  They left Northolt at 6.30 am, arriving in Exmouth at 7.30 pm.  The team split into two pelotons and took turns to complete ten mile stretches of the ride, battling strong winds and rain for the last 100 miles.

Stan Livy, a former Commonwealth Games rower and vet at the Goddard Group’s Eastcote branch, battled on against the bad weather and completed 154 miles of the route himself while Jeremy Stewart, Head Vet at the Mandeville, also completed 146 miles.

Adrian Hayter, Practice Manager said:  “We chose Exmouth as our destination as its where our sister company SynveryVets Recruitment is based and many of the team there joined us for the last leg.

We had great support for the ride both from colleagues and friends within the practice wanting to take part or sponsor us.  We were particularly grateful to the many local businesses which supported us, providing both equipment and financial support.

It was a fantastic experience although, as the weather took a turn for the worse, the last leg was hard going!  Once we finally made it to Exmouth and warmed up, we headed straight to the local Chinese restaurant and celebrated our achievement. The following morning some of the braver members of the team got up early and went for a dip in the sea before we headed back to London.

We’re delighted to have raised so much money for such a worthy charity.”

Sarah Welsby, Community Fundraiser for Hounds for Heroes, added:  “The guys from Goddard Veterinary Group have done so well - we at ‘Hounds’ are delighted!  The amount of money raised will go such a long way in helping to support the purchase and training of our Cadets.”

The team’s sponsorship page is still open at http://www.justgiving.com/GVG-Synergyvets. You can also TXT your sponsorship by texting GVSY80 to 70070 with your donation.
